Domain Accounts (T1078.002) is a MITRE ATT&CK technique associated with Stealth, Persistence, Privilege Escalation, Initial Access. Adversaries may obtain and abuse credentials of a domain account as a means of gaining Initial Access, Persistence, Privilege Escalation, or Defense Evasion.(Citation: TechNet Credential Theft) Domain accounts are those managed by Active Directory Domain Services where access and permissions are configured across systems and services that are part of that domain.
Attackers use Domain Accounts because it provides a reliable way to advance their objective within the Stealth, Persistence, Privilege Escalation, Initial Access tactic, often with a favorable balance of impact versus detectability on ESXi, Linux, macOS, Windows environments. Defenders should assess this behavior in the context of the affected platform and adjacent activity rather than treating it as a standalone indicator.
