DNS Calculation (T1568.003) is a MITRE ATT&CK technique associated with Command and Control. Adversaries may perform calculations on addresses returned in DNS results to determine which port and IP address to use for command and control, rather than relying on a predetermined port number or the actual returned IP address.
Attackers use DNS Calculation because it provides a reliable way to advance their objective within the Command and Control tactic, often with a favorable balance of impact versus detectability on ESXi, Linux, macOS, Windows environments. Defenders should assess this behavior in the context of the affected platform and adjacent activity rather than treating it as a standalone indicator.
Adversaries may perform calculations on addresses returned in DNS results to determine which port and IP address to use for command and control, rather than relying on a predetermined port number or the actual returned IP address.
